About The Event

Itinerary Our first stop will be Riverhollow, a nearly wild campsite, near New Ross in County Kilkenny. This is a gorgeous, wooded campsite on the banks of the Barrow River. Each pitch is tucked away in the trees with enough space from your neighbours to ensure a wild camping experience connecting with nature, away from electric lights and busy roads. At night we will light the big fire and cook together under the stars. Facilities include a compost toilet and a drinking water tap. Small campervans can be accommodated in the carpark near the main campfire. Well behaved dogs on leads can also come if they are used to camping and don’t serenade us at night.

We will stay here for 2 nights with a trip to Tintern Abbey and the Hook Peninsula on the Saturday. Depending on the weather, there will be woodland or coastal walks, a castle to explore and a chance for a swim at the beach.

On Sunday we pack up and move camp to Graignuemanagh, a charming little town further upriver with an amazing swimming spot. You’ll have the option of staying in Graignuemanagh for the day or heading up to Goresbridge and canoeing back to our campsite, a 4-hour easy paddle on the beautiful Barrow, going with the flow of the river.

On our return to Graignuemanagh, we’ll soothe our tired muscles in the Hot Box Sauna, plunging into the adjacent river to cool off, before visiting some of the local pubs for delicious food and a pint or two.

Monday morning sees us back in our canoes, gliding downstream for approximately 3 hours until we reach St Mullins. This picturesque village boasts a motte and bailey structure and the delightful Mullichain Café on the riverbank—a perfect spot for a late lunch before we drive back to Graignuemanagh for the evening.

It is very easy to canoe down the Barrow and no prior paddling expertise is required. Our qualified paddlesport leader will guide us, ensuring a safe and enjoyable journey. Along the way, we’ll encounter around 10 locks between Goresbridge and St Mullins. These locks add an element of fun without any white-water thrills. However, if you’re still not convinced about getting in a canoe, there is plenty to do if you would rather spend the afternoon on land in Graignuemanagh and the surrounding area.

Tuesday morning we pack up and say our goodbyes, until the next Wild Women adventure.
